Sam Breckenridge '58

Football


A Lathrop, MO native and a four year starter and letter winner in football with one letter in track & field as a freshman. Sam played on teams that were a combined 24-9-4 and won or shared three MCAU Titles. He was coached by WJC Hall of Famers Norris Patterson and Jim Nelson and was a Tri-Captain as a senior. Sam was named All-Conference as a senior as well as an Honorable Mention All-American by the Williamson Foundation.

 

Chuck Hartzell '60
Football and Wrestling


A St. Louis, MO native and a four-year letter winner in both football and wrestling for the Cardinals. Chuck was one of the ‘pioneers’ of Jewell’s wrestling program, ‘Pic’ as he was known, had a career record of 38-0 in conference competition and 8-0 in AAU competition during his college days. His lone loss was at the NAIA National Meet his senior year. Chuck is the first wrestler to be enshrined in the WJC Athletic Hall of Fame. He also played tackle on both offense and defense in football.

 
Martha Jane Jordan Meinershagen '93 
Swimming and Diving


A St. Louis, MO native and a four-year letter winner in swimming/diving for the Lady Cardinals. Martha qualified for the NAIA National Meet three times (’90, ’92 & ’93) and missed the opportunity in ’91 because she was studying abroad at Harlaxton second semester. She placed 7th at Nationals as a junior and 6th (All-American) as a senior in 1 meter diving. Martha was the only member of the swim/diving team as a junior and senior and was coached by Mitzi Mathews.

 
Norman Short
Basketball, Football, Track and Field


A North Kansas City, MO native graduated at Jewell in three years. Norman was a 3-year letter winner in basketball and lettered twice each in football and track & field. He set the WJC record in the broad jump at 22’10” as a sophomore and was three time MCAU All-Conference selection in basketball as he led the Cardinals in scoring all three years. Norman was Co-Captain as a senior with WJC Hall of Famer, Dr. Richard Bowles. He played for Dick Harp and Don Farris in basketball and coached at Jewell three years (1955-58) where he served as assistant coach in football and basketball and the head coach of baseball. Norman guided Jewell to its first ever NAIA National Baseball Tournament in 1957.

 
1975-76 Men's Swim Team


Considered Jewell’s finest swim team this Cardinal squad was undefeated in dual meets (12-0) and set 13 school records. In the prestigious Washington U. meet they won eight of 17 events, setting nine school records, five meet records and three pool recordsn Members of the squad included: Mike Adams ’79, Bill Bowman ’79, Kevin Burgler ’77, Ros Burrows ’77, Chris Eaton ’80, Tom Kretsinger ’78, E.J. Leibinger ’77, Ed Leonard ’79, Jerry McCoy ’76, Glen Melia ’77, Rich Miller ’78, Kent Peach ’76, Ken Personett ’79, Bernard Phelan ’77, and Dave Stockard ’79. Their coach was WJC Hall of Famer, Larry Hamilton ’61.
