William Jewell College alumni and friends enjoyed the 67th annual Achievement Day Dinner and Celebration on March 3, 2011. Four outstanding alumni were introduced to a crowd of more than 600 guests as the recipients of this year’s Citation for Achievement Honorees. Stuart Bascomb '63, Robert Gengelbach '69, Cynthia L. (Hoover) Martin '81 and Diane E.H. Webber '81 were surrounded by family, former classmates and faculty as they joined an elite group of previous award winners. More than 20 past Achievement Day Honorees attended the dinner and were present to congratulate the recent class.
President David Sallee announced that Jewell has raised leadership gifts and commitments totaling $50 million during the first phase of its comprehensive fundraising campaign, including a new $3 million gift toward the campaign’s cornerstone project, the Pryor Learning Commons. The new Pryor Learning Commons is the signature project in the first phase of “Shaping the Journey: The Campaign for Jewell,” which focuses on priority initiatives coming out of the College’s strategic plan adopted in late 2007. The Campaign, with over 10,500 donors to date, is on pace to be the largest in the history of the College. The announcement marks the beginning of the Campaign’s public phase. Following dinner, guest speaker Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and journalist described William Jewell’s liberal arts experience as “an education that allows students to connect dots that aren’t immediately connectible.” He said liberal arts institutions “must be vital and relevant and train young minds to solve problems, to see what others have yet to see, and to think energetically about creating jobs and wealth.”
