Debbie Blanton ’76

Profession: Community Volunteer
Jewell Major: English and Sociology

What brought you to Jewell?
My family moved more than most because my dad was in the military. I attended four high schools and graduated in the Philippines. I was looking for a smaller Christian college in the Midwest. I chose Jewell based on the college catalog and a gut feeling. My first time on campus was when I arrived to begin my freshman year.

What was your most impactful or memorable academic or professional experience at Jewell?
One of my most memorable academic experiences took place during Winterim 1974. My future husband and I designed our own program of study with the help of our advisor, Gary Phelps. My family was living in Germany and we used that as our home base while we traveled throughout Luxembourg, Germany, France and Austria. We learned a lot about other cultures but most of all, we had the time of our lives.

What did Jewell provide you that another college or university could not have?
The lifelong friendships are what mean the most to me. Finding the love of my life, my husband, Wes is definitely the most meaningful personal experience.

What is it that you do now professionally, academically or otherwise?
Spending time with our family and especially enjoying our three grandchildren is my greatest joy. I am actively involved in the Liberty community through my church, Liberty School District Foundation and William Jewell. My husband and I enjoy traveling but we are always happy to come back home to Liberty.

How did your Jewell experience help you to get where you are now?
The liberal arts education I received at Jewell gave me a good foundation for the rest of my life. I was exposed to new ideas and given the tools I needed to be a successful individual.
