 | 1883 Baseball Team |
All throughout the 2008-2009 academic year, William Jewell has celebrated its rich athletic heritage by honoring the 125th anniversary of intercollegiate athletic competition on the Hill. It all started with the 1883 baseball team, pictured to the right. In fact, the first baseball team was organized and financed entirely by students. It is amazing to see the evidence of our student-athletes’ passion for the game, even 125 years ago.
As Jewell celebrates this milestone and moves closer to NCAA membership, the College has developed a compelling vision for the future of the baseball and softball facilities.
The first phase of these improvements, an enhanced press-box and restrooms complex, has been approved pending fundraising success. A view of what this finished project will look like is included in the rendering below. Successful completion of this first phase will significantly improve the game-day experience for our baseball student-athletes and our loyal fans.
With lead gifts in hand, the College is working to find partners capable of supporting the project and moving Jewell closer to its vision for the facility. We invite you to join other alumni, friends, and parents in supporting this important project. Please contact Kent Huyser, Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, at (816) 415-7562 or kent@jewellalumni.com, if you have questions about how to best support the project. To make your gift to the capital project fund for baseball, simply click here or enclose a check made out to William Jewell College and indicate that your check is supporting the baseball capital project. All donors making gifts of $500 or more will be recognized in a visible and lasting way. This effort represents the first step in upgrading the baseball and softball facilities in the Spratt Sports Complex. Forthcoming initiatives will provide for new “grand-stand” style seating (illustrated in the rendering below) and, for the first time ever, lights in the baseball and softball stadiums, along with other facilities enhancements.
